ECHR Application Form Guide

An individual application to the European Court of Human Rights must be lodged within 4 months of the final domestic decision, using the official application form. Applications that do not meet formal requirements are rejected.

Who can apply?

Anyone within the jurisdiction of a Contracting State to the European Convention on Human Rights who claims to be a victim of a violation of the Convention.

Required documents

A completed official application form, copies of the relevant domestic decisions, a chronological account of the facts, the Convention Articles relied upon (in LGBTQ+ cases often 3, 8 and 14) and the remedies sought.

Rule 39 (interim measures)

In cases involving a real risk of removal to a country where the applicant would face ill-treatment, an urgent Rule 39 interim measure may be requested to suspend the removal.
