Visa Guide for Trans People

Trans people whose gender identity does not match the details on their passport should prepare visa applications carefully. Document mismatch, travel risk and border-control practices all require informed preparation.

Passport & gender marker

Several countries — including Germany, Canada, Australia, the Netherlands, Malta and Iceland — recognise an 'X' gender marker. In many other jurisdictions changing the gender marker requires a court decision.

Visa interview

Your current appearance may differ from your passport photo. Notifying the consulate in advance in writing, and bringing supporting medical documentation, can reduce the risk of refusal.

Safer receiving countries

Canada (IRB), the Netherlands (IND) and Germany (BAMF) apply gender-sensitive interview protocols for trans applicants. It is usually possible to request a specific interviewer in advance.
